Face Oils and Serums

Radiant Skin

People are using face oils and serums in their skincare routines to achieve healthy and radiant skin. With there being so many available options to choose from, it can be confusing to decide which to use and how to apply them properly.

Below helps to clarify what their differences are, how to use them, their benefits and my current favourites!

What are They?

Serums

These products are typically light and watery or have a gel-like consistency. Serums have small molecules and can repair and prevent wrinkles, dehydration, hyper-pigmentation and acne by providing hydration and active ingredients such as peptides, vitamins, alpha hydroxy acids and/or hyaluronic acids to the deep layers of the skin's epidermis.

Face Oils

These products are typically rich and oily in consistency. Face oils usually have large molecules but can also be blended to have a variety of sizes. Since some oils have a variety of molecule sizes, there can also be facial oils that are labelled as serums. The role of facial oil is to repair and prevent free-radical damage, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, acne by providing nutrients, antioxidants, moisture and balance to the outer layers of the skin.

How to use them

The general rule is to apply your products in order of consistency, starting with the lightest and ending with heaviest. Everyone's skin needs are different so routines will vary, but generally, it would go: wash, tone, serum, face oil and/or moisturizer, and sunblock (if daytime). Face oils can also be mixed with or placed under or on top of your moisturizer (depending on how rich it is). Some people find face oils rich enough that they can skip moisturizing altogether.
