Facial tools are all the rage!
Influenced by ancient beauty rituals, facial tools are typically made of a crystal that is uniquely shaped to be swept, pressed and/or rolled along the face and neck. Many people are intrigued by these tools and are introducing them into their beauty routines. Below compares and clarifies the uses of three well liked facial tools: the Gua Sha, the Jade Roller and the Facial Wand.
Benefits of Using Facial Tools

Jade Roller
This facial tool has a long handle with a large stone at one end that is to be rolled along the face/neck and a smaller stone at the other end that is to be rolled under the eyes. Although this tool is now available in many different types of crystals, the most common crystal used for this tool is Jade because it is naturally cooler at room temperature. Being naturally cool, it helps to reduce inflammation and puffiness in the skin.
How to use a jade roller:
On freshly cleansed skin, mist your face with a facial mist or toner and apply a serum and/or face oil
Make sure your tool is clean, having washed it with warm soapy water
Massage the skin by rolling the stones back and forth in an upwards and/or outwards motion
Jade Roller Tips:
Try wearing a sheet mask while using the jade roller to massage the products into your skin
Although jade is naturally cool, you can keep it in the fridge for a cold and sensational experience
Overall Impression:
Pros: Jade rollers are the easiest and most straight forward tool to use.
Cons: Sometimes they can fall apart. They also apply a little less pressure than the other tools.
Gua Sha
This facial tool is flat with curved edges which compliments the natural curves of the face, eyes, and neck. Although the Gua Sha can be made out of many different kinds of materials, they are most commonly made of either jade stone or rose quartz. Jade stones have purifying energy and are naturally cool at room temperature and rose quartz crystals are known for promoting self-love and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
How to use a Gua Sha:
On freshly cleansed skin, mist your face with a facial mist or toner and apply a serum and/or face oil
Make sure your tool is clean, having washed it with warm soapy water
On the Forehead, Neck, and Jaw use the outer rounded edge and apply medium pressure pushing and gliding upwards towards the crown of the head
On the Nose, Under Eye and Eyebrow, use the smaller indented side edge and apply medium pressure pushing and gliding to the outer sides of the face
On the Cheeks, use the larger indented edge and apply medium pressure by pushing and gliding to the outer edges of the face
Gua Sha Tips:
Amazing to relieve allergy or sinus buildup
Nice to use for massage on the back of the neck
Can use on the thighs to reduce cellulite
Try warming the Gua Sha up under warm water to promote circulation and then end by cooling the Gua Sha off with ice water to close the pores
Overall Impression:
Pros: Very effective results as you can apply as much pressure as you need. You can instantly feel and see immediate results.
Cons: Is a little more complex to learn when starting out.
Facial Wand
This facial tool is long and wand like in shape, having a large rounded end and a small rounded end which can both be used to apply to acupressure points. These tools can be made out of many types of crystal. The one in the picture above is made of white turquoise which is also known as howlite. This stone is has a calming energy that reduces stress, anxiety, and tension.
How to use a facial wand:
On freshly cleansed skin, mist your face with a facial mist or toner and apply a serum and/or face oil
Make sure your tool is clean, having washed it with warm soapy water
Use the long side of the tool in a flicking motion underneath cheekbones
Use the large round end to apply pressure to temples, push and glide to promote lymphatic drainage along eyebrows, ears, jaw, under eyes and neck
Use the small round end to apply pressure to small acupressure points
Facial Wand Tips:
Use on acupressure points all over the body (eg. between index finger and thumb or temples to relieve headaches, sides of the nose to relieve sinus pressure, along calves to relieve muscle tension).

Pros: A unique tool that provides a variety of functions
Cons: Covers less surface area than other tools
